Drop Leaf Tables

Drop leaf tables have enjoyed a roller coaster ride of popularity.  During some eras the drop leaf table is the dining table of choice, the end table of preference, or the ideal library table.  At other times, drop leaf tables have been looked upon as outdated or as grandma's collectibles.  As with tilt top tables, the drop leaf table was designed to save space.

Drop leaf tables have two basic styles of leaves.  The example shown above is the straight leaf.  It is a square or rectangular leaf that can be raised and lowered on either side of the table center.

The predominant tables found with the square or rectangular leaf style were used for dining or library tables.  Additionally, Pembroke tables have drop leaves.  The dining and library styles have a skirt beneath the table top.  The Pembroke table is generally much more narrow with a drawer.  Pembroke tables are often used as end tables or can be used as game tables for games such as checkers or chess.

The other basic style of drop leaf table is primarily used as a dining table, as was the original design.  However, over time the curved leaves have been used on more decorative pieces of furniture.

As shown to the right, the rounded leaf offers an attractive style.  The rounded leaves were ideal for the small family's dining table.  With the leaves up or opened, the family could sit around the table much as we do around the smaller table in the breakfast room.

The drop leaf table became familiar during the William and Mary era, but predominated Colonial homes in the early years of our country.  These tables provide adequate surface space with the leaves raised, but take up minimal room space when not in use.

During the recent decades, the drop leaf table has fallen from favor as a dining table in most homes as the Queen Anne Style of dining table has become the most popular, especially in reproductions.  However, it must be noted that a drop leaf table is one of the most versatile and most useful tables available.  Much like the tilt top table, the drop leaf is a space saver, although often larger and more stable.
