Used tilt top tables are not always plentiful at used furniture stores or at auctions. However, when you find one there are a few things to look for before making a purchase or a bid.
First of all, as always, set a price you are willing to pay for a used tilt top table whether it is in a used furniture store, a collectibles store, or at auction. It is easy to get "carried away" just because you find one. Determine a price and don't exceed it. If there is one thing to remember when shopping at used furniture stores or auctions, it is that the item, the tilt top table in this case, is not the only one in the world. If you don't buy this one, sooner or later you will find another. Stay within your price range.
Be sure to check all the usual things you would check when selecting a piece of used furniture. The most important thing to check when looking at a table with a top that moves is the mechanism that allows the movement. As a key component of the table, the tilt is the one part that can break first.
Check the moveable parts to be certain they are in good working order. If the moving mechanism has been replaced, be sure it has been done so with care. The new part should be of the same style and design as the older section. Check for extra screw holes and larger hinges. These are the two biggest give aways when a table has been redone.
As always, to confirm that the table and the tilt top is authentic look on the under side of the table top for aged discoloration. The wood should have aged at the same rate and has the same discoloration. Another hint that work has been done on the table top or the moving parts is that you may seen a different style of hinge or marks left by a circular saw if the top has been replaced.
While most of these marks and changes may not have much meaning to you if your intent is to use the tilt top table for daily use, these points are always a reason to negotiate for lower pricing.
